 A Weirton, WV native, Joanna Bernabei comes to the Eastern Kentucky women's basketball program from West Virginia Wesleyan College where she was head coach for the 1998-1999 season and compiled an 18-9 record and third place finish in the WVIAC. While at WVWC, Bernabei also had the responsibility of being the Senior Women's Administrator. During the 1997-1998 season, she was a graduate assistant coach for EKU while working on her master’s degree in Sports Administration.

 Bernabei attended West Liberty State College, where she majored in Exercise Science and minored in Pre Pharmacy. She was the starting point guard all four years at WLSC, earning First Team All WVIAC every year, and finished her career in standout fashion. She was named 1997 West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year and currently holds the NCAA Division II all time career assist record of 1,107. Bernabei was selected NCAA Division II All American three times. She holds the NCAA II record for assists in a game (24) and holds more than 20 national, conference and school records for assists and steals in a career, season and game. She led her team to an 80-36 record during her four years.

 Bernabei was named West Virginia High School Player of the Year in 1993. She has coached at various high school basketball camps and has held her own point guard clinic since 1997.
